Archaeological Site of Ani

Trade routes and architectural traditions meeting on a plateau.

Explore all 22 properties

Why does it matter?

Ani preserves a medieval city shaped by successive rulers. Its role as a Bagratid capital and a Silk Roads crossroads supported its growth. Religious monuments, defences and domestic remains reveal encounters between Armenian, Byzantine, Seljuk and Georgian architectural traditions across a striking plateau landscape.

PLAN YOUR OWN VISIT

Before you set off.

Read the defences and settlement together rather than treating Ani as a single monument. Check weather and official visitor boundaries before walking across the open site. There is no need to fit every Kars city visit into the same day.

Opening, admission, restoration and access arrangements can change. Check current conditions with the site’s official operator.

Connect the discovery to a city.

These province guides are starting points for nearby sights and local flavours, rather than a boundary map or an organised tour itinerary.
