Ephesus
An ancient city shaped by a changing coast.
Why does it matter?
Ephesus developed in relation to the former estuary of the Kaystros and a shifting shoreline. Hellenistic and Roman settlements, harbour connections and civic monuments reflect that changing setting. The Library of Celsus and Great Theatre are best understood within this wider urban history.

Before you set off.
Follow the urban plan instead of visiting only one monument. Do not assume that every archaeological section or additional exhibition area shares the same admission and access arrangements; check each planned part of your visit.
Opening, admission, restoration and access arrangements can change. Check current conditions with the site’s official operator.
Connect the discovery to a city.
These province guides are starting points for nearby sights and local flavours, rather than a boundary map or an organised tour itinerary.
