Urban heritage made up of distinct historic areas.

Why does it matter?

The inscription does not mean that every part of Istanbul belongs to one World Heritage site. The Archaeological Park, Süleymaniye, Zeyrek and land-wall areas represent distinct parts of the Historic Peninsula. Byzantine and Ottoman monuments are read together with neighbourhood fabric and the city’s evolving urban setting.

PLAN YOUR OWN VISIT

Before you set off.

Allow time to explore one historic area in depth. Check worship buildings and museums separately. Treat traffic, walking and vehicle collection as distinct planning decisions rather than assuming they fit one simple route.

Opening, admission, restoration and access arrangements can change. Check current conditions with the site’s official operator.

Connect the discovery to a city.

These province guides are starting points for nearby sights and local flavours, rather than a boundary map or an organised tour itinerary.
